Hermening drops out of 29th SD race…

Republican Kevin Hermening dropped out of the 29th Wisconsin Senate District race today.  I found it to be an interesting development.  While partisan Republicans and Decker detractors will tend to rally behind Pam Galloway as the presumptive challenger in November, it’s difficult to tell whether that can be cobbled together for a win for her in November.  Russ Decker has a support base that carves into some traditional conservative constituencies in the rural areas, alongside some solid support from labor and partisan Democrats.

Hermening would have been a unique personality to have in the mix and I felt that he was likely to win the GOP primary, although there are obviously some credible Galloway supporters.  He is an excellent stump speaker and he has an interesting resume.  Because I was in the Air Force at the same time that he was in the Marines and the Iran hostage crisis was such a huge deal for anyone in uniform at the time, I related to him in some ways, although we have significant political differences.

Anyway, I think it would have been a more interesting race for political junkies like me with Hermening in it, although I don’t blame anyone for not wanting to go through the exercise, either.

  1. So I am curious Jim, how did you see the press release? Are you working in that area now?

  2. Actually, I found it odd that only 550 Radio seemed to be on this late this morning so I checked into it and learned about the “EMBARGO UNTIL 7 P.M.” notation. I’ve changed the text of this entry because while it is POSSIBLE that 550 Radio didn’t honor the embargo, it probably equally possible that they were playing by different rules than some of the other media outlets. (And that’s possible, in view of their typical tone, tenor, format — or the fact that their main morning host is the 1st vice chair of the county GOP?) Of course, it’s all just speculation. 🙂

  3. Actually, here’s the honest scoop, in the event anyone is truly interested – feel welcome to check out the details included herein…you will find this 100% accurately depicted as follows:
    1. ALL MEDIA DISTRICT-WIDE RECEIVED THE EMAIL FROM ME SIMULTANEOUSLY, AT 11:13 A.M., WEDNESDAY, JUNE 16TH.
    2. WAUSAU DAILY HERALD REPORTER ROB MENTZER ERRONEOUSLY POSTS THE NEWS ON THE WDH WEBSITE, NOTICES 10 MINUTES LATER THAT THE WORDS EMBARGO UNTIL 7:00 P.M. (6/16) APPEAR ON THE NEWS RELEASE, CALLS ME WITH AN APOLOGY FOR “MISSING THAT” AND INFORMS ME THAT HE HAS HAD THE RELEASE REMOVED FROM THE WDH WEBSITE.
    3. WSAU NEWS – CHRIS CONLEY – SEES THE WDH POSTING AND RUNS WITH IT BECAUSE HE DETERMINES THAT THE NEWS EMBARGO MUST BE LIFTED.

WHY THE EMBARGO UNTIL 7:00 P.M.?

I BELIEVED THAT IT WAS MOST FAIR FOR BOTH LOCAL PAPERS – THE WDH AND THE CITY PAGES TO BOTH GO TO PRESS THE SAME MORNING, THURSDAY, SO NEITHER GETS SCOOPED. I BELIEVED THAT ELECTRONIC MEDIA SHOULD ALSO HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL VERY LATE WEDNESDAY AND BE ABLE TO HAVE THE STORY READY TO GO FIRST THING THURSDAY MORNING WITH THE NEWS STORY.
WHEN ASKED, I AGREED TO ALLOW TV 9 – WAOW – AT ASSIGNMENT EDITOR CASEY LAKE’S REQUEST, TO RUN WITH THE STORY FOR THE 10 P.M. BROADCAST.

THERE WAS NO COLLUSION WITH WSAU 550 RADIO ON MY PART. ALL OF THE DETAILS LISTED ABOVE WOULD BE VERIFIED BY THE INDIVIDUALS IDENTIFIED HEREIN.

  4. Okay, mystery solved — and thanks for stopping by, Kevin! There is absolutely no reason to doubt any aspect of your account and it all makes sense. From here, it looks like a classic case of the blind man and the elephant (and that’s actually kind of apt, when you think about it.) 🙂

While we’re at it, the non-partisan financial literacy effort that you discussed in your release also sounded interesting and it’s an area in which is there is a crying need for more effort.

  5. Barb Morgan Says:

Kevin thanks for providing facts. That is one thing that you can always be counted on to provide. I know that you would never let partisan politics get in the way of telling the truth.

Jim, I am very disappointed that you let your dislike for WSAU and Pat Snyder prompt you to write inaccurate information. I really thought you were above that type of antics. I always respected your opinion on issues even if I did not see eye to eye with you. However, I will evaluate what you write and your opinion with a different mindset from now on.

  6. Suit yourself. This is a blog and you will get opinions and speculations here all the time that you can take or leave. I’m happy to have the record completed with additional facts, but one fact is that the story came out on WSAU well before 7 p.m. It was worth wondering how that happened and I don’t apologize for offering what was clearly identified as a POSSIBLE explanation. Of course, once it’s out in another media outlet, it’s public domain and it’s fair game for all. The programming and discussion on WSAU speak for themselves in terms of bias and ideology, but I’m pleased that it doesn’t bleed over into the straight news coverage. As for me, I’ll make no bones about offering a very different perspective than what you will find in WSAU’s programming or some of the blog entries on their site, too.

  7. Another Shameful Politician!

Or rather, he has no shame. I am talking about the big billboard that I have to drive by every day going from Wausau to Schofield.
I am talking about this sign that says, “We Need Jobs”, and then the typical, untrue politician saying, “Vote For Me Kevin Hermining.”

When I read this, I flash back to when I saw Kevin Hermening at the UWMC, in a debate on the Iraq war, with all US Veterans. It was this same man I saw constantly rolling his eyes, and in general, using childish behavior. Dismissing what any other veteran said, that did not agree with war as a means to peace. I did not know who he was.

He then offered his point of view. I got to find out what the man who is constantly dismissing the others with his little giggles and sighs has to say. Good. He said how the Iraq war was the wrong war, the wrong place to be. We need to get out troops out and the war funding stopped, now. He said that he would support sending troops to Afghanistan.

He said Bin Laden is hiding in Afghanistan, and was from the beginning. Afghanistan is the war he supports and has supported from the beginning. Iraq is wrong, agreeing with the other veterans on the panel. He would vote to stop funding Iraq and start funding a war in Afghanistan.

And then, Obama ordered to Afghanistan, like Hermning suggested only a few months before. But, now he was incensed at the idea. “We cannot afford this war. It is costing the US troops, money, and reputation in the world.”
Again, this was 1 -2 months after he suggested that Afghanistan the true and good war. But now that it was Obama doing it, Hermening said no way. It is the wrong war, get out now, we can’t afford it. Look to the USA and not overseas. But………. didn’t. Ah, never mind.

Never-the-less, he still supports the economic policies that crashed, completely ruined the economy of the USA. He still supports the failed conservative economic policies of the 8 years of the Bush administration.
He still supports sending US jobs overseas in “Free Trade Agreements” good for business and in turn, good for the USA.
Now that I just got fired, or “laid-off”, it puts it into perspective. If Hermening really wants we the people to retire “High Tax” Russ Decker, what about the millions of people the out of work that those taxes support in unemployment? Is he just going to abandon us? Or will he flip-flop again?

Without tax money, I would have no money. I worked hard for 5 years, and was “laid-off” to cheaper jobs overseas, supported by Hermenings economic policies, and now he says, too bad! Lower Taxes!
